How to convert a video to GIF
- Pick your video. Click the file area or drag-and-drop. Supported: MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, and any format your browser supports natively.
- Trim to the right moment. Enter a start time in seconds and a duration (1–60 s). You only need the highlight reel.
- Set output dimensions and FPS. Lower is smaller: 10 FPS at 480px is a great Discord-friendly default.
- Click Convert. Encoding runs in a background worker so the page stays responsive. A progress bar keeps you informed.
- Download. The result is a pure GIF with no watermark, no branding, and no hidden metadata from us.
Supported video formats
This tool relies on the browser's native <video> decoder. Browser format support in 2026:
- MP4 (H.264): Supported in all major browsers.
- WebM (VP8/VP9): Supported in Chrome, Firefox, Edge. Limited in Safari.
- MOV (H.264): Supported in Chrome, Edge, and Safari on macOS/iOS.
- AVI: Limited — may work in some Chromium-based browsers.
- HEVC/H.265 in MP4: Supported on macOS/iOS Safari, Windows Edge with hardware codec, not Firefox.
If your format isn't supported, convert it to MP4 first with a local tool, then use this converter.
Tips for best GIF quality
- Pick the right frame rate. 8–12 FPS looks natural for most clips and keeps file sizes manageable.
- Don't go too wide. 480px is the sweet spot for social sharing. 720px is only needed for embedding in web pages where you want crisp detail.
- Short clips look better. 3–8 seconds makes for a shareable loop. Anything over 15 seconds gets very large.
- High contrast footage converts well. Gradients and subtle color variations suffer most from the GIF 256-color limit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which video formats are supported?
Any format your browser can play natively — typically MP4 (H.264/H.265), WebM (VP8/VP9), and sometimes MOV/AVI. If your browser can play the file, this tool can convert it.
Is my video private?
Yes. The entire conversion happens locally in your browser. No bytes of your video are uploaded to any server at any point.
Can I convert a GoPro or drone video?
Yes, as long as the browser can play the format. MP4 files from action cameras convert perfectly. Very high-resolution 4K clips may be slow — consider reducing output width to 480px for faster conversion.
How long can the video be?
You can convert clips up to 60 seconds per run. For longer videos, set a start time and duration to capture just the clip you want.
Why does the GIF look washed out or have fewer colors?
GIFs only support 256 colors per frame. This is an inherent limitation of the GIF format, not of this tool.
How is this different from the MP4 to GIF tool?
They use the same engine. The Video to GIF page accepts a broader range of formats.
