How GIF to MP4 conversion works
Unlike converting MP4 to GIF, going the other direction requires a full video encoder. The most robust cross-browser solution is ffmpeg.wasm — a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg that runs entirely inside your browser's sandbox.
- ffmpeg.wasm is downloaded once (~25 MB) and then cached by the browser.
- The GIF frames are decoded, fed to the FFmpeg encoder pipeline, and an MP4 is produced.
- No data leaves your device at any point.
Why convert GIF to MP4?
- File size. A 10 MB GIF can often be compressed to under 500 KB as an H.264 MP4.
- Color quality. MP4 supports millions of colors vs. the 256-color palette of GIFs.
- Platform compatibility. Twitter, Slack, and many messaging apps auto-convert GIFs to MP4 on ingest.
- Looping. HTML5
<video loop>creates a seamless looping animation that loads much faster than a GIF.
Coming soon notice
This tool is a fully designed stub pending the ffmpeg.wasm integration. All other tools on this site (MP4↔GIF, compress, resize, crop, reverse) are fully functional right now. Check back soon for GIF to MP4, or contact us if you have an urgent need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is GIF to MP4 harder than MP4 to GIF?
Converting from GIF to MP4 requires a video encoder. The browser does not have a built-in H.264 encoder, so we use ffmpeg.wasm.
Will my file be uploaded to a server?
No. Even ffmpeg.wasm runs entirely in your browser inside a Web Worker. No video data is transmitted anywhere.
Why would I convert a GIF to MP4?
MP4 files with H.264 encoding are 5–20× smaller than equivalent GIFs.
When will GIF to MP4 be fully available?
The ffmpeg.wasm integration is in progress. Check back soon.
What is the output quality like?
ffmpeg.wasm produces standard H.264 MP4 output at the original GIF frame rate and dimensions.
